When an order is placed and triggers the purchase rule, customers will earn points for the amount of money they have spent, excluding shipping. If this checkbox is checked then customers will be awarded points for the amount of money they spent on tax, regardless of whether or not is is included in the line item price. If this checkbox is not checked the customers will not be awarded points for the amount of money they spent on tax, regardless of whether or not is is included in the line item price.

For merchants using United States Dollars (USD) or Canadian Dollars (CAD), this option will be unchecked by default. For merchants using all other currencies, this option will be checked by default.

An example of tax being included in line item price is Value Added Tax (VAT) for most countries. An example of tax not being included in line item price is United States Sales Tax.

As an example, if an order is placed for 100 USD worth of items, and has 20 USD of sales tax on top of that for a total of $120, the customer will earn points for $120 of spend if the box is checked and only $100 if the box is not checked.

As another example, if an order is placed for 120 GBP worth of items already including VAT, the customer will earn points for £120 of spend if the box is checked and only £100 if the box is not checked.
