Tiers are available on our Advanced and Plus plans, and as an add-on on Classic. Conditional and subscriber tiers work on Shopify and Shopify Plus only, because Shopify is the only platform that lets you tag customers. To add tiers to your account, contact our Support team at support@loyaltylion.com.

Overview
A conditional tier is a loyalty tier your customers join because of a tag on their Shopify profile, rather than because of what they have spent or earned. It sits outside your regular tier ladder, so your customers cannot reach it by crossing a threshold, and you cannot move someone into it by hand.
A subscriber tier is a conditional tier reserved for your active subscription customers. It works in exactly the same way and uses the same setup. The only difference is that Recharge supplies the tag rather than your team.
Your team manages conditional tier tags in Shopify. We read them, and never write them.
How conditional and subscriber tiers can help you
Conditional tiers let you give one group of customers their own version of your loyalty program. Wholesalers can earn points at a different rate and pay different amounts for rewards. An invite-only VIP group can hold their status whatever they spend. Your staff can have a tier nobody else sees.
A subscriber tier rewards the customers who have already committed to you, and gives everyone else a concrete reason to subscribe. You can offer your subscribers exclusive rewards, bonus points, or both.
How to add a conditional tier
You can add conditional tiers while you are building your tiers, and after your tiers have launched. Your boundary tiers are fixed once you launch, but conditional tiers are not.
The form differs slightly between the two, so follow the section that matches where you are.
While you are setting up your tiers
In LoyaltyLion, go to Program, and then Tiers.
In the tier structure form, go to the Conditional tiers section.
Click Add conditional tier. If you have Recharge connected and no subscriber tier yet, this opens a menu, so choose Custom conditional tier.
Enter a tier name.
Enter the Tag exactly as it appears in Shopify. The tag is case-sensitive, so it has to match Shopify exactly or nobody joins the tier.
Select Hidden from customers if you want the tier to be visible only to the customers who are in it.
Finish the rest of your tier setup, and launch your tiers.
After your tiers have launched
Go to Program, and then Tiers.
Open the More actions menu, and select Add conditional tier.
Enter a Name for the tier.
Enter the Tag exactly as it appears in Shopify.
Enter your Condition text, which tells your customers how to qualify for the tier.
Select Hidden from customers if you want the tier to be visible only to the customers who are in it.
Click Save. The modal closes, your new tier appears on the Tiers page, and a confirmation shows at the bottom of the screen.
Once the tier is set up, every tagged customer is placed into it automatically. Set up your activities and rewards for the new tier so your customers in it earn and redeem at the rates you want.
Adding a subscriber tier
Recharge tags every customer who has an active subscription with the tag Active Subscriber, so a subscriber tier is a conditional tier built on that tag. We fill the tag in for you and lock it, so you do not have to enter it yourself.
Connect Recharge first. Go to Program, then Integrations, and select Recharge. Full setup is in the Recharge integration manual.
While setting up your tiers, click Add conditional tier and choose Recharge subscriber tier.
After your tiers have launched, open the More actions menu and select Add Recharge subscriber tier.
Give the tier a name, and it is assigned automatically to every customer with an active Recharge subscription.
The option appears only once Recharge is connected, and only while you have no subscriber tier yet. Recharge is currently the only subscription platform we support for subscriber tiers.
How your customers are placed in conditional tiers
Conditional tiers outrank your regular tiers. When a customer matches a conditional tier's tag, we place them in that tier whatever tier they were in before, and whatever position the conditional tier holds in your list.
This is worth planning around. A customer sitting in your top spending tier who then subscribes moves into your subscriber tier, so make your subscriber tier your most generous tier. Otherwise subscribing costs your best customers rewards instead of gaining them.
If a customer matches more than one conditional tier, we place them in the highest one they qualify for. You can have as many conditional tiers as you need, as long as each one uses a different tag.
When a customer stops matching the tag, we move them to the best tier they qualify for on your other criteria, so nobody is left stranded.
For example, say your tiers are Entry ($0–$49), Mid ($50–$99) and VIP ($100+), alongside a subscriber tier. A customer who has spent $80 in the past 12 months cancels their subscription. We move them into Mid, because that is the best tier their spend qualifies for.
FAQ
Which platforms can use conditional tiers?
Shopify and Shopify Plus only. Shopify is the only platform that lets you tag customers, and the tag is what places your customers in the tier.
How many conditional tiers can I have?
As many as you need, as long as each tier uses a different tag.
What happens if a customer qualifies for more than one conditional tier?
We place them in the highest tier they qualify for.
Can I move a customer into a conditional tier by hand?
No. Entry is decided entirely by the tag on your customer's Shopify profile, so add or remove the tag in Shopify instead.
Can I have more than one subscriber tier?
No. A subscriber tier is based on having an active subscription to any product on your store, so there is only one group to reward. If you want to treat groups of subscribers differently, use conditional tiers with your own Shopify tags.
Can I have a subscriber tier for each subscription product?
No. The subscriber tier covers customers who have subscribed to any product on your store, and it cannot be narrowed to a specific product.
My subscription customers are not in the right tier. Why?
Recharge can take a while to tag new subscribers. If a new subscriber has not moved into the tier straight away, check again the following day. If they are still in the wrong tier, contact our Support team at support@loyaltylion.com.
How do I know which of my customers are subscribers?
Check in Recharge. Go to Customers, and look at the # active subscription column. Any customer with a number above 0 has an active subscription.
