Bonus points on products and collections

How to award extra points when customers buy a specific product or from a specific collection

Written by Jason Leader

In this article:

Overview

Two activity rules award bonus points on top of your standard Make A Purchase rule:

  • Purchase a product awards bonus points when a customer buys a particular product, and optionally a particular variant of it

  • Purchase from a specific collection awards bonus points when a customer buys any item from a collection you choose

Use either rule to promote something new, or to encourage purchases of items that are not selling well. Both stack with Make A Purchase, so the customer earns the standard points as well as the bonus.

Bonus points on a product

  1. Go to Program, then Rules, then Create rule

  2. Click the Purchase a product rule

  1. Find the product's product ID. It is at the end of the URL when you view that product in Shopify

  1. Enter the product ID and click Find Product

  2. To award the bonus on one variant only, enter its variant ID

The variant ID is optional. Without one, the rule triggers for any variant of that product.

  1. Choose how many points to award for buying the product

Bonus points on a collection

This rule is available on Shopify.

  1. Go to Program, then Rules, then Create rule

  2. Click the Purchase from a specific collection rule

  3. Select your collection from the dropdown

  4. Choose how many points to award for buying an item from that collection

Multiply by quantity

This decides whether the bonus applies per item or per order. Turned off, the customer earns the bonus once per order. Turned on, they earn it for every qualifying item in the basket.

Approval period

Points are approved after the number of days you set here. Aligning that with your refund policy, for example 14 days, usually works best. Leave it blank and it defaults to 0 days, which approves the points immediately after purchase.

How refunds affect the bonus: if a customer buys the qualifying item alongside other products and refunds only that item, the bonus points are not voided. If the whole order is refunded or cancelled, the bonus points are voided.

Title, notification and description

  • Title: how the activity appears to customers on your loyalty page

  • Notification: what a customer sees when they earn the points. The {{points}} text is replaced with the number awarded

  • Description: what a customer sees when they click the rule on your loyalty page

FAQ

How are the bonus points calculated?

By item, not by price. If you set a collection rule to award 100 points for collection X, and your Make A Purchase rule awards 1 point per $1, then a $5 purchase from that collection earns 105 points: 100 for the bonus and 5 for the purchase.

Does the rule backdate to purchases made before I enabled it?

No. But if you also use Reward historic purchases, we calculate historic points using your current rule setup. So a customer who comes back and creates an account may receive bonus points for a qualifying purchase they made before you enabled the rule.

How do these rules work for guest customers?

If a guest buys the qualifying item and creates an account while the rule is live, they will receive the bonus points. If they create an account after the rule is deleted or disabled, they receive only the standard purchase points, subject to your Reward historic purchases setting, and not the bonus.

What happens if I change the product in Shopify?

Delete the rule in LoyaltyLion and recreate it with the correct product variant and SKU. Otherwise we cannot find the product in Shopify, and the rule will not award points.
