Overview

The Subtotal integration rewards your customers with points when they buy your products at other retailers, such as Walmart and Target, not only on your own store.

Your customers link their retailer accounts through Subtotal from your loyalty page. When they buy your products from a linked retailer, Subtotal tells us how much they spent, and we award points based on your Subtotal rules.

Once you've set up the Subtotal integration, your customers can earn in 2 new ways:

  • Points for linking a retailer account

  • Points for every $1 they spend on your products at a linked retailer

How the Subtotal integration can help you

Plenty of your most loyal customers buy your products somewhere other than your store. They pick you up at Target or reorder you on Walmart, and until now, none of that spending has counted toward your loyalty program.

With the Subtotal integration, your customers earn for buying your products wherever they shop, so your program rewards everyone who chooses your brand. Their retailer purchases sit in the same loyalty account as their orders from your store, so you can recognize customers you'd otherwise never see.

Before you start

To use the Subtotal integration, you need:

  • A Subtotal account, set up with the retailers you sell through

  • A paid LoyaltyLion plan

  • A program whose primary store uses US dollars (USD)

Each Subtotal account can be connected to 1 loyalty program.

How to set up the Subtotal integration

  1. In LoyaltyLion, go to Manage, and then Integrations. [NEEDS CONFIRMING: menu path]

  2. Choose Subtotal, and click Connect to Subtotal.

  3. Sign in to Subtotal and approve the connection.

  4. You'll return to LoyaltyLion, and the page will show Subtotal is connected to this loyalty program.

If the Subtotal integration won't connect:

  • If your program's primary store doesn't use US dollars, the Subtotal integration page shows that Subtotal is only available in US dollars, and you won't be able to connect.

  • If you see Subtotal account already connected, that Subtotal account is linked to another loyalty program. Disconnect it from that program first, or contact our Support team at support@loyaltylion.com.

  • If the Subtotal connection ever stops working, open the same page and click Reconnect to Subtotal.

Link retailer account rule

The Link a retailer account rule awards points when your customers link a retailer account through Subtotal.

  1. Go to Manage, and then Rules.

  2. Add the Link a retailer account rule.

  3. Set the points your customers earn for linking an account.

  4. Under Earn limit, choose how often your customers can earn:

    • Once in total: only the first account they link earns points

    • Once for each retailer account they link: every retailer they link earns points once

  5. Choose the retailers the rule covers.

  6. Click Save. The rule appears with your other ways to earn.

Shop at a linked retailer rule

The Shop at a linked retailer rule awards points for every $1 your customers spend on your products at a retailer they've linked through Subtotal. [NEEDS CONFIRMING: rule name as it appears in the admin]

  1. Go to Manage, and then Rules.

  2. Add the Shop at a linked retailer rule.

  3. Set the points per $1 your customers spend on your products.

  4. Choose your settings, described below.

  5. Click Save. The rule appears with your other ways to earn.

  • Award points for tax: When this is on, the Shop at a linked retailer rule includes sales tax in the spend that earns points, in proportion to the items that earn.

  • Reward historic purchases: When your customer links a retailer account, Subtotal sends us the purchases already on it. Choose how far back those purchases earn points: 1 hour, 1 day, 3 days, 7 days, 1 month, 3 months, 1 year or all time. The period counts back from when your customer linked the account.

  • Retailers: Purchases earn points only at the retailers you select on the Shop at a linked retailer rule, and every selected retailer earns at the same rate. While all retailers are selected, any retailer you add to Subtotal later earns too.

  • Milestone challenges: Purchases at linked retailers can also count toward milestone challenges, as Linked retailer purchases.

What your customers see

Both Subtotal rules appear with your program's other ways to earn, on your loyalty page and in the loyalty panel. Your customers see how many points they can earn, and click Link an account to link a retailer through Subtotal. Once they've linked one, they see which accounts they've linked and can link another.

The Shop at a linked retailer rule also tells your customers how far back their purchases count, and that purchases can take up to 24 hours to reach their loyalty account.

FAQ

Why didn't my customer get points for a purchase at a retailer?

Check these, in order:

  • Different email address. We award points to the loyalty account with the same email address your customer used in Subtotal. Your loyalty page shows which email address to link with.

  • Not a member yet. Your customer needs a loyalty account with that email address before they can earn.

  • Too soon. Purchases can take up to 24 hours to reach LoyaltyLion.

  • Outside the history period. Older purchases earn only if they fall inside your Reward historic purchases period.

  • Retailer not selected. Check the retailer is selected on the Shop at a linked retailer rule.

When are points for Subtotal purchases dated?

We add points on the day the purchase reaches LoyaltyLion, not the day your customer made it. So a historic purchase earns at your current rate.

Are points removed if a customer returns a retailer purchase?

No. Subtotal doesn't tell us about returns, so we don't remove points for them.

Can I set a different points value for each retailer?

No. Every retailer you select on a Subtotal rule earns at the same rate.

Can I connect one Subtotal account to more than one loyalty program?

No. Each Subtotal account can be connected to 1 loyalty program. To move it, disconnect it from the first program, or contact our Support team at support@loyaltylion.com.

Can I use Subtotal with receipt upload?

Yes. The Subtotal integration and receipt upload are separate rules for different retailer use cases, so you can run both.
