What are calendar-based tiers?

Calendar-based tiers are an alternative method to setting up your tiers in LoyaltyLion. Having your tiers based on the calendar gives customers an easy-to-understand timeline for when their tier status is up for evaluation, similar to other industries, such as aviation.

These tiers follow the same setup as our standard boundary tiers. It is just the timeframe in which the tiers are evaluated.

How do calendar-based tiers work?

Customers will be placed into tiers based on their activity over the calendar year. Tier memberships are earned until the end of the following calendar year.

For example, Customer A spent $500 in your store in 2024 and was added to the Gold tier. For the rest of 2024, and for all of 2025, Customer A will remain in the Gold tier. If Customer A did not spend anything at your store in 2025, they will move down to the bottom tier, Bronze, at the start of 2026.

Why would I want to create calendar-based tiers?

Calendar-based tiers are a great way of adding more structure to your loyalty program. As the start and end of the tier period are clearly defined, it also gives your customers a very black-and-white understanding of what they can expect from the tier system, rather than a system with variable endpoints.

It can also give your internal reporting some structure, as you have a clear time frame for data to pull from that affects your whole program.

How to create calendar-based tiers?

  1. Go to Manage > Tiers.

  2. Follow the Tier Setup, by adding the tiers, and the boundaries for your tiers. You can then make any changes to your activities and rewards.

  3. On step 5, Tier Duration, you will then see an option for Calendar, which you can select and continue.

4. Continue and choose if you want to launch your tiers now or later.

5. Upon choosing Launch Now, you will see an option to retroactively add your customers to tiers.

If you do not wish to add customers to your tiers upon launch, do not select the option.

6. After choosing your option, continue to launch your tiers.
