Shopify: How New Customer Accounts affect your loyalty program

How customers join, earn and receive loyalty emails when your Shopify store uses New Customer Accounts

What are New Customer Accounts?

New Customer Accounts is Shopify's sign-in for customers. Instead of a password, your customers enter their email address and a one-time 6-digit code, and Shopify treats everyone who verifies their email as an account holder. They can then see their orders and account details in a customer accounts portal.

LoyaltyLion works with both New Customer Accounts and Classic customer accounts. This article covers what changes for your loyalty program. To show loyalty details inside the customer accounts portal, see how to add loyalty to your customer accounts.

How New Customer Accounts affect your loyalty program

How customers join

With New Customer Accounts, customers join your program in these ways:

  • Creating an account or signing in. We enroll a customer the first time we see them signed in, whether they created an account or signed in with a one-time code.

  • Placing a POS order with their email address.

You choose which of these apply in Settings, then Enrollment. With Automatic (recommended), signing in always enrolls a customer and you can turn POS orders on or off. With Manual opt-in, customers join only when they choose to. Find out more about opt-in program enrollment.

To use LoyaltyLion with New Customer Accounts, enable LoyaltyLion via Shopify App Embeds.

Rules & activities

Signed-in customers can complete all your rules as normal.

The join rule works slightly differently. With Classic accounts, customers earned the points by creating an account with a password. With New Customer Accounts, we award the points when the customer joins, which is usually their first signed-in visit.

Rewards

Signed-in customers can redeem their points for rewards as normal.

Dashboard, insights, tier analytics and reports

Enrollment works in much the same way with New Customer Accounts as with Classic accounts, so you shouldn't see a big change in your enrollment numbers. Customers who don't sign in, and don't interact with your loyalty program, stay as guests and aren't enrolled.

Guest checkouts aren't enrolled in your tiers either.

Loyalty emails

With New Customer Accounts, customers don't explicitly create an account, so we only send these LoyaltyLion emails to customers who accept marketing in their Shopify customer profile:

  • Welcome to the loyalty program

  • Reward available reminder

  • Monthly reward reminder

  • Reviewer to referrer

The Points expiring soon email isn't affected. We send it to every enrolled customer who hasn't unsubscribed.

If you send loyalty emails through another email platform, set up the same marketing consent conditions there.

FAQ

Can I switch between Classic and New Customer Accounts?

Yes. LoyaltyLion works with both, and enrollment works in almost the same way, so you and your customers won't notice a difference.

What about customers who placed orders before my program launched?

If your store has always used New Customer Accounts, we enroll customers as they engage with your store from now on, for example when they return or sign in.

If your store used Classic accounts in the past, customers who created an account with a password are already enrolled.

How long do customers stay signed in?

Shopify keeps customers signed in with cookies, which usually last 30 days. A customer who returns within that time and hasn't cleared their cookies is still signed in, so we recognize them. The exact length can vary with your store settings, customizations or third-party apps.

What happens when a customer signs in with Shop Pay at checkout?

If your checkout has any LoyaltyLion block, such as Redeem points at checkout, we treat a customer who is signed in at checkout as a signed-in customer and enroll them, as long as your program uses automatic enrollment.
