Overview
In Display > Languages & text, you can change any text in your loyalty program line by line, from calling your points "coins" to rewriting a whole section. On the Advanced and Plus plans, you can also run your program in more than one language, and translate it by hand, by importing a file, or with Auto-translate.
Where to find Languages & text
You change your program's text and languages on one page in LoyaltyLion.
Log in to your LoyaltyLion account.
Go to Display > Languages & text.
Pre-translated languages
During the setup process of your loyalty program, you can select one of our 8 languages for your loyalty program. We provide official LoyaltyLion translations for these languages:
Danish
Dutch
English
French
German
Italian
Spanish
Swedish
On the Advanced and Plus plans, you can also run your program in more than one language, from up to 138 languages.
Changing your program's text
Do you want to change "points" to "coins" or "bucks"? Or maybe you want to translate your program to a completely new language?
Your loyalty program is fully customizable. You can translate the text to your chosen language or amend only certain parts of it on the Languages page.
IMPORTANT:
Changing the language is an advanced feature, so be sure to read the instructions below carefully before you change any translations.
From time to time we will add additional translations for new features. When we do this, we'll send you an email to let you know so you can come back here and customize them if you need to. By default, new translations will show up on your store in your current language.
Variables
Some translations contain variables, like %{smart_count}. These will be replaced, usually with a number, when the translation is used. Don't translate the variable. Leave it in English.
E.g. %{smart_count} points will become 10 points
Plurals
Some translations are plurals and contain four pipes: ||||. This is used to provide multiple translations for different pluralizations. The first translation (before the pipes) is used when the number is exactly 1, and the second is used in all other cases, including 0. In French, the first translation is also used for 0.
HTML
Some translations contain some basic HTML, which must be left intact or it may break the display of your loyalty components. If you are not comfortable editing HTML, we recommend you skip these translations.
Finding the right text to translate
Within the Languages page, there are different categories of available text. This is defined by who will see the text, and what feature it is connected to.
Each sub-category will expand to show the text within that feature:
Updating text
The table makes it easy to see the reference, original text, and new text. The columns are as follows, left to right:
Location reference. This is a light description of what element the text is for in the LoyaltyLion UI
Original text: Shown in your default language
Target language text: In the picture below, we're customizing text for the English language, and can change what should appear to the customer.
Status: If you haven't customized the string yet, it will show with a
NEWbadge.
You can also use the search function to find specific wording, such as every string containing the word 'points':
Setting your default language
In Display > Languages & text, you can set your program's default language, its Date and time locale and its Number locale. You can choose from up to 138 languages.
On the Advanced and Plus plans, you choose your default from the languages you've added, so add a language before you make it your default.
Adding languages
Adding languages and Auto-translate are available on the Advanced and Plus plans.
You can run your loyalty program in more than one language. In Display > Languages & text, click Add language and select the language you want to add:
If the language isn't one of our 8 pre-translated languages, your program shows its text in English until you translate it. A regional variant of a pre-translated language, such as Austrian German, starts from our translation for that language.
You have three ways to update the strings in a language:
Directly
You can update the strings directly in the UI.
Export & Import
Export the full list of your loyalty program's strings, add your own translations, and import the file to update them. Export and import are available on every plan.
Auto-translate
You can use AI to translate into a language from your default language. Although not required, you can also give the AI some additional context to help with tone of voice.
The Auto-translation can take a little time, but you can track progress on the overview. You can also go away and come back once it's finished.
Once it has finished, go into the language and click Apply translations.
That will add the new translations to the strings, and when you're ready, hit Save.
Don't forget to hit Save; if not, you will lose your translations.
Translating rules and rewards
You translate the names and descriptions of your rules and rewards yourself, because they're your own content rather than LoyaltyLion's standard text.
You can translate them in Languages & text, or in the rule or reward itself.
Updating in the rule or reward directly
Go to the rule or reward you want to update, and you will see a Translations module.
How we choose a customer's language
We want your customers to have as smooth an experience as possible when browsing your program, so we follow a priority when deciding which language to render:
First, we look for a locale set in the client configuration, i.e. using
lion.configure({ locale: '...' }).If that is unavailable, it checks the locale specified in the URL query parameters, i.e.
?locale=enIf that is still not found, it falls back to the locale coming from Shopify, i.e. (
window.Shopify.locale).
If none of those exist, it defaults to the site’s primary language setting.
FAQ
Can I translate tier names and tier benefits?
Yes. You can translate tier names and tier benefits in Languages & text for each language you add to LoyaltyLion.
How do I translate my FAQ and custom blocks?
The FAQ on your loyalty page and any custom blocks you added in the Theme Editor aren't in Languages & text. You translate them in the Theme Editor instead: change your store's language in Shopify, launch the Theme Editor, and edit them for that language.
What does the % next to the language mean?
It shows how much of the language you've customized. The percentage goes up as you edit and save strings. For example, customizing 22 of 223 strings shows 10%.
All languages start at 0%, but our pre-translated languages come fully translated and ready to use. Any other language you add shows English text until you translate or edit it.
