Overview
A drop is a time-limited campaign. You choose what's dropping, who it's for and how long the window stays open. Your customers claim it from their loyalty page while it's live, and when the window closes, anything they haven't used is gone.
Drops come in two types, and each one is its own campaign:
Reward drops offer your customers a reward that expires at the end of the drop window.
Points drops offer your customers a pool of extra points that expire at the end of the drop window. They can spend them on rewards, or at checkout, alongside their normal points balance.
Both types share the same scheduling and audience options, and both appear on your customers' loyalty page while they're live.
How a drop works
You offer the drop and your customers claim it. Nothing lands on anyone's account until they do, so a drop is something they take part in rather than something that arrives.
That gives you two levers on numbers. Set how many are available and it's first come, first served, so the drop can sell out. Each customer can claim a given drop once.
You can run one reward drop and one points drop at the same time, but not two of the same type with overlapping dates.
How Drops can help you
Urgency is one of the few things that reliably moves loyalty members who are sitting on a balance and doing nothing with it. A drop gives you a deadline without any manual work: no points imports, no negative imports to claw them back afterward, and no discount codes sent outside your program.
That last point matters more than it sounds. When you run a time-limited offer through your email platform, the revenue it generates isn't attributed to your loyalty program. Run the same offer as a drop and it is, so you can see what it actually earned you.
Because your customers claim a drop themselves, you also learn something an automatic giveaway can't tell you: who was paying enough attention to take it.
And a drop gives you something to say to a specific group. Target your top tier with early access, your lapsed customers with a reason to come back, or your high-balance members who've never redeemed with points that expire if they don't.
How to set up a drop
In LoyaltyLion, go to Manage > Campaigns
Select Reward drops or Points drops, depending on what you want to offer
Choose what's dropping — pick the reward for a reward drop, or enter the number of points for a points drop
Set how many are available, so the drop closes once they're gone
Set your schedule — the date and time the drop opens, and the date and time it closes
Choose your audience — filter by tier, points balance, order count and loyalty status. You can also set a different reward for each tier
Review and schedule the drop
What your customers see
A live drop appears as a card on your customers' loyalty page, in its own campaigns section, and they claim it from there. Alongside it, they can browse all your drops: what's live now, what's coming up, and what's already been and gone, with the ones they claimed and the ones they missed marked separately.
LoyaltyLion doesn't send an email or wallet notification when a drop opens. Claiming a drop emits the customer.claimed_reward program event, so you announce the drop from your own email platform, the same way birthday rewards work today. While a drop is live, LoyaltyLion also tags the Shopify customers who are in it, so you can build a Shopify segment or flow around them.
FAQs
What happens to a drop nobody claims?
Nothing to undo. Because nothing is granted until a customer claims it, an unclaimed drop simply closes at the end of its window.
What happens to a drop that's claimed but not used?
It expires at the end of the window. An unused reward is removed, and unused drop points are taken back.
Do my customers keep a reward they claimed with drop points?
Yes. Once they've spent drop points on a reward, that reward is theirs.
Can I run two drops at once?
You can run one reward drop and one points drop side by side. You can't run two reward drops, or two points drops, with overlapping dates.
Which rewards can I use in a drop?
Money off, free shipping, collection and Seamless Free Product rewards. Rewards with inventory tracking turned on aren't available in a drop yet.
Can a customer claim the same drop twice?
No. Each customer can claim a given drop once.
What happens if a customer returns an order they paid for with drop points?
Their normal points are returned. Drop points aren't, so if a reward cost 400 points and drop points covered 300 of them, a refund returns 100 points.
