How customers join your loyalty program

Written by Jason Leader

In this article:

Overview

Your customers use their existing store account as their loyalty account. There is no separate loyalty sign-up, and we enroll a customer automatically the first time they log in to your store.

When a customer becomes a member

Creating a store account

A customer becomes a fully enrolled member of your loyalty program when they create an account at your store. We do not create a separate account for them: their store account is their loyalty account, using the same login.

Buying through Shopify POS

On Shopify, a customer also becomes a member when they complete a purchase on Shopify POS.

Customers who are not enrolled

In any other situation we treat the customer as not having opted in to your loyalty program. These customers are not enrolled:

  • A customer who has only ever checked out online as a guest

  • A customer who has never checked out and never registered otherwise

  • On Shopify, a customer who started checkout in Shopify POS and then abandoned it

  • On Shopify, a customer who was invited to create an account, for example through a bulk import to Shopify, but has not yet accepted the invite

FAQ

Do customers get points for purchases they made before creating an account?

Only if you have Reward historic purchases turned on in Settings, then Orders. If a customer creates an account within the window you set, we award points for the purchases they made before enrolling.

Why is the number of new customers on my dashboard lower than my total members?

The dashboard figure counts the customers who enrolled during the period you are viewing. If you have only just joined LoyaltyLion, that includes every enrolled customer. The count on your members page includes those same customers, plus any guests you have given points to manually, for example through an import.

Why does my Members count differ from the number of accounts created in my store?

Shopify has two kinds of customer: those with an account, and guests who bought something without creating one. Your Members list includes:

  • Customers who created an account

  • POS-only customers who made a purchase

  • Guests you have given points to manually

A guest has no account on your store, so they cannot use their points until they create one.

Can I stop certain customers from joining my loyalty program?

Not during sign-up, because LoyaltyLion does not manage the sign-ups or memberships on your store. You can block a customer from your loyalty program once they have joined.
